The animal control section enforces the city and county's ordinances/order related to animals. Animal control officers make every attempt to pick up loose dogs and cats which are not properly confined and causing a nuisance to the community. This section also investigates dog and cat bites, investigates cruelty cases, assists the sheriff department on loose cattle and administers an annual rabies clinic for the city and county residents.

The animal shelter is maintain under this section and is the facility where the animals are placed when the animal control officers pick them up. The animals are kept for 72 hours to give the owner of the animal an opportunity to claim their animal. After the 72 hours, if the animal is not claimed, the animal will be placed for adoption up to 10 days from the time the animal entered the shelter. If the animal is not adopted by that time, the animal will be humanely euthanized. Animal control mainly deals with animals classified as strays or animals that run at large. There is no way this department is knowledgeable where these animals might have been or if they have contacted any of the related animal communicable disease. The animal shelter is a governmental facility and is not equipped with enough personnel and no veterinary services to handle animals, which are picked up with all sorts of animal related diseases. Over 90% of the animals picked up are animals which are classified as strays or run loose and may have been in contact with other animals which have animal related diseases. This department does not insure these animals are healthy when adopted from this facility.

Please remember, The City of Kingsville and Kleberg County does not require citizens to own pets. It is a privilege that comes with responsibility thus, making the pet owner ultimately responsible for abiding to animal ordinances/orders, their pets' care and maintenance.
