Vector Control

Vector Control Division destroys swarms of honeybees in open areas and will respond to emergency stinging occurrences. Provides information for control of rodents and other health related pests, spray the City for adult mosquitoes and do mosquito surveillances.

During adult mosquito control, we use what is known as a U.L.V. (ultra low volume) machine, to spray a chemical mist in the air. The mist is not as thick as the fogs once used in the past. The mist is intended to kill adult mosquitoes only and should not be expected to control or kill mosquito larva. Normally, the spraying is performed during the evening and early morning hours due to low wind speeds. This is also the time when the majority of the mosquitoes are feeding. High winds and rain inhibit mosquito personnel ability to spray for mosquitoes. Mosquito surveillance consists of collection and sending off adult mosquitoes to the Texas Department of Health for identification purposes. Several types of mosquitoes are present in the City as well in the County.

Mosquitoes identified from this area are: Culex quinquefasciatus, Culex tarsalis, Culex coronator, Psorophora columbiae, Psorophora cyanescens, Psorophora ciliate, Anopheles crucians and Anopheles quadrimaculatus. Mosquito breeding areas can easily be control by the public. Standing water is the principle breeding area for mosquitoes in residential areas. The main culprits for holding water are flower pots, tin cans, used tires, baby pools, bird baths, tree stumps with holes, pet water dishes, beer cans/bottles, etc. Any type of standing water provides an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes and by removing these items, you remove the breeding grounds; therefore, helping to control mosquitoes. By viewing Reduce the Risk of Disease, the pdf will assist you in identifying mosquito breeding sites.
