1: What is a Venue Tax?
A Venue Tax is a 2% Hotel Occupancy Tax added to the bill on a hotel stay or other short-term rental dedicated to the support of the designated venue.
2: How much money with the Venue Tax generate?
Based on historical Hotel Occupancy Tax Collection, the City estimates the Venue Tax will generate about $145,000-185,000 per year.
3: Who pays The Venue Tax?
The Venue Tax is paid by someone staying in a hotel or short-term rental. It is added onto their bill and collected by the Hotel and then paid to the City, just like the existing Hotel Occupancy Tax.
4: Why can’t this money be used on something else, like street repairs or other City problems?
A Venue Tax is restricted by State Law as to what it can be used for approved venue projects. Hotel Occupancy funds are also restricted and can only be used for tourism-based projects.
5. What will happen to the King Ranch Museum?
King Ranch is currently exploring a plan to relocate their museum within Downtown Kingsville. Their goal would be to have an improved museum connected to the King Ranch Saddle Shop that will draw more visitors to downtown.
6: Will the Venue Tax increase my property tax?
No, the Venue Tax is not a property tax and will not be added to your property tax bill. The only people that pay the Venue Tax are those people paying a hotel bill inside the City Limits.
